Everyone loves to have a brownie as a late-night snack and buy its mix in bulk.

But sometimes we forget one or two packs stored in the pantry for a few months.

Then the question arises that do brownie mix go bad or can the mix be used because, at first sight, it is looking perfectly fine?

Most people use these mixes as per the best-before date mentioned on the packaging but it is only an estimated date that does not assure that the brownie mix has gone bad.

How Long Does Brownie Mix Last? Does Brownie Mix Go Bad?

Save for Later!

These mixes can be used for a certain period and generally, people think that period ends with the best-before date.

But one can make their mix last even after that date by keeping it up with good storage conditions.

If we talk about the general shelf life of closed brownie mixes then they can last for more than 3 to 6 months after the date mentioned on the pack.

After that period the brownie will lose its fluffiness and becomes flat.

The moisture inside the brownies will also make them wet.

If you have opened the pack of brownies then the shelf life will only be for a couple of days.

At room temperature or in the pantry these batters can last only for 3 to 4 days.

Thus it is advisable to put the brownie in the fridge to store the opened mix pack for a week.

These are rough ideas of all the kinds of mixes available.

However, you do not have to throw your batter out after that period as storing it correctly can extend the life of brownies more than the periods mentioned earlier.

Save for Later!

When you are confused about that should you eat the old brownie mix you have found or not then you have to look for some changes that assure that the mix has gone bad.

  • Changes in Appearance.

When you are noticing changes in your batter such as discoloration then they are indicating that the mix has gone bad.

Sometimes you can also experience the growth of mold which is a clear indication to throw your batter out.

  • Bug Infection.

Many people think that storing it in a pantry is safe when the pantry is away from direct sunlight which is right.

But most of the pantries are infested with bugs that can make your mix go bad in no time.

That is why if you decide to store your batter in the pantry then you need to be sure that the pantry is free from any bugs and pests.

  • Off-Smell or Odor.

As we mentioned earlier that it is made up of flour and items that go rancid.

Because of this if any of the ingredients get bad then the aroma will change into an odor.

Then the mix will give a foul smell and you can understand that it is not edible anymore.

How to Store Brownie Mix?

Save for Later!
  • Store in a Dark and Dry Place.

Storing is essential to save guard your batter against any external infection.

One should avoid storing in dam areas or areas that are prone to moisture as this can help you prevent the growth of mold and retain the quality even after a long period.

  • Keep the Leftovers in the Packaging.

One can expect the mixes to last more if the packet is closed.

But once they are opened then they will become hard to make it last just for a couple of days.

So if you want to slow down the deterioration process then you should cover the leftovers in airtight containers to avoid light, heat, and air.

  • Use Freezer for Long-Term Storage.

One of the best ways to exceed the shelf life of the batter is to store it in the freezer.

That is because the freezer will not let the flour become rancid and will preserve the taste and texture of the batter.

Before putting the batter in the freezer you have to transfer it to a cookie sheet and then froze unless you are ready for baking.
