Frequently Asked Questions
Can I eat food past its "best by" date?
"Best by" is about quality, not safety. Most foods are fine days or weeks past that date if stored properly. "Use by" on meat and dairy is the one to take seriously.
How can I tell if food has gone bad?
Look for mold, off smells, slimy texture, or unusual color changes. If something smells sour when it should not, or the texture has changed significantly, throw it out.
Does freezing food kill bacteria?
Freezing pauses bacterial growth but does not kill bacteria. When food thaws, bacteria resume multiplying. That is why proper thawing in the fridge matters.
How long do leftovers last in the fridge?
Most cooked leftovers last 3-4 days in the fridge at 40F or below. Rice is the exception. Cooked rice should be eaten within 1-2 days due to Bacillus cereus risk.
Is it safe to refreeze food that has been thawed?
If thawed in the fridge and still cold, yes. If thawed at room temperature or in warm water, no. Texture may suffer on the second freeze but safety is fine if the cold chain held.
